The project involved demolition of a modern single residential unit and construction of a new residential unit in the footprint of the former. It encompassed c. 650m², running south-west to north-east, and was within the footprint of two former Victorian dwellings’ gardens fronting onto John Street (22m to the north-east). It was bordered by modern concrete block walls on all sides. Victorian three-storey houses are to the north-east, a modern bungalow to the south-east, a hospital car park to the south-west and a garden to the north-west.

Monitoring took place on 5 February 2011. It entailed supervision of mechanical excavation of all groundworks. The site stratigraphy comprised 0.4m of brown garden soil, beneath which there was compact yellow natural subsoil. Modern materials were evident within the topsoil, associated with the construction of the previous modern bungalow, and no archaeological deposits were encountered.
