The Archaeology Company completed a desktop assessment in February 2010 on behalf of Sligo GAA. This assessment concerned a proposed GAA training facility, including a ‘centre of excellence’ building, playing pitches and associated site works. The site, which incorporates an area of 8.9ha, is in the townland of Scardanmore, Strandhill Road.
The assessment concluded that although there are no recorded sites within the development area, the site itself is located within a landscape rich in archaeological heritage. The nearest RMP site, SL014-041, classified as a ringfort/ring-barrow, is approximately 200m east of the site in the townland of Lissawully.
Following this report, Sligo County Council requested that a geophysical survey be carried out as part of a Further Information Schedule. The aim of the survey was to identify areas of archaeological potential and it was completed in July 2010 by Martina McCarthy under Consent No. 10R82. Following a reconnaissance magnetic scan of the entire area, nine areas of archaeological potential were identified and were subject to detailed magnetic gradiometry and earth resistance survey.
Numerous anomalies were identified by the geophysical survey. Targeted test-trenching over the anomalies was carried out in May 2011. None of the anomalies were of archaeological significance and they represented modern agricultural activities and geological variations.
