The client applied for retention of changes which occurred during construction of a previously permitted development consisting of a private dwelling, garage, roadside wall and driveway at Drummod, Strokestown. Having received planning permission, he then proceeded with his development but at a location roughly 20m closer to a univallate rath that straddles the neighbouring lands to the north. My assessment called for an examination of all disturbed ground, the trowelling of a vertically cut face very close to the rath and the monitoring of the planting of a thorn hedge between the house and the rath. There was no indication of archaeology having been affected by the works, with a small drain-cum-leat outside the north-west of the rath being more than likely associated with an earlier roadside fence (on 1838 map) before the road was realigned.
