Additional testing was undertaken in June 2011 on behalf of Roscommon County Council and the National Roads Authority in advance of the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass at the townland of Toobrackan.
This testing (Phase 3) followed two previous phases of testing. Phase 1 was undertaken in 2009 by Nial O’Neil and Tara Doyle of Headland Archaeology (Excavations 2009, no. 699, 09E0475 [Areas A–F], and no. 688, 09E0476 [Areas G–P]). Phase 2 was undertaken in July and August 2010 by Tom Janes, James Kyle and the writer (Excavations 2010, no. 577, 10E0298 [Areas 14], no. 563, 10E0299 [Areas 57], and no. 584, 10E0307 [Areas 813]), all of IAC Ltd.
A total of 657 linear metres were excavated within the test area. A single site of archaeological significance was identified, consisting of a burnt mound deposit that measures 3m by 2m. A 5m x 5m exclusion zone was set up around this site and it was preserved in situ.
