Additional testing was undertaken on behalf of Roscommon County Council and the National Roads Authority in advance of the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass at the townlands of Currinah, Bohalas and Bockagh in June 2011. This testing (Phase 3) followed two previous phases of testing. Phase 1 was undertaken in 2009 by Nial O’Neil and Tara Doyle of Headland Archaeology (Excavations 2009, no. 699, 09E0475 [Areas A–F], and no. 688, 09E0476 [Areas G–P]). Phase 2 was undertaken in July and August 2010 by Tom Janes, James Kyle and the writer (Excavations 2010, no. 577, 10E0298 [Areas 14], no. 563, 10E0299 [Areas 57], and no. 584, 10E0307 [Areas 813]), all of IAC Ltd. Additional Test Areas 1 and 4 were greenfield sites, while Additional Test Areas 2, 3 and 57 consisted of wetland terrain. A total of 4,436 linear metres were excavated within the seven areas. A single site of archaeological significance was identified. Currinah 5 consisted of two areas (5a and 5b), one of which contained a burnt mound with stone-lined trough (5b) and the other (5a) a small spread of burnt mound material. Currinah 5 was excavated by Shane Delaney in July 2011 (below, No. 526; 11E0231).
