A request for an Archaeological Assessment as part of an RFI was imposed on the developer for a site at Kilbeg Upper, Carlanstown. The development was in the vicinity of ME011-021 (Earthwork). During a pre-excavation site visit, a raised, roughly circular area was identified as the monument. Four test trenches were excavated by machine to the base of the topsoil. Three of these traversed the slope of the raised area, two on the north-western side and the third on the south-western side. No material of an archaeological nature was disclosed by the testing.
In the opinion of the licensee, based on observation of the test trenches, the feature may be natural or geological in origin, although the testing investigated only a portion of the feature.
