Monitoring of topsoil-stripping and cable-trench excavations along roads associated with the High Voltage Cable—East–West Interconnector Project (HVC EWIP) continued during 2011 (see also Excavations 2010, no. 509). This included the topsoil-stripping of lands associated with stream crossings at Cabinhill and Rathregan, as well as the site of a converter station with associated construction compound and outfall at Woodlands. Two areas of charcoal-rich soil, uncovered under the topsoil layer, were investigated at Woodlands, and a number of medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, 19th-century clay pipe fragments and a possible flint blade were also recovered from this area. In addition, a number of post-medieval pottery sherds and clay pipe stems were recovered in trench excavations along roads.
Cable-trench excavations are scheduled to continue until mid-2012, and topsoil-stripping associated with the laying of cables from the existing Woodlands substation to the converter station is scheduled for early 2012.
