Pre-development testing was carried out on 26 and 27 October 2011 at a site at Weatherfort townland, Ballyglass. The proposed development, which was in the pre-planning phase, consisted of the construction of a dwelling, effluent treatment system and associated services. Testing was required owing to the proximity of a ringfort (MA090-078), 8m outside the north-western site boundary.
The site was in a field of pasture c. 2.5km north-west of Ballyglass village. Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of seven trenches positioned to best cover the development area, especially that closest to the ringfort. The trenches measured 69.75m, 20.3m, 24.7m, 24.3m, 29.3m, 30m and 30.7m long respectively, 1.2–1.45m wide and 0.2–0.85m deep. Below the topsoil was natural subsoil. The topsoil contained a small number of modern pottery sherds. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during the pre-development testing.
