So as to maintain an adequate distance from a monastic enclosure (MA088-058), a proposed house was kept as far north as possible in the field at Knappaghmanagh, Westport. Its percolation area was designed to sit in the neighbouring field to the north. Twelve 2m-wide trenches were cut to boulder clay level, to test the house, driveway and percolation areas. No features turned up and any items found were modern. In early 2012 the local Planning Office expressed their dissatisfaction with the percolation area being on a separate property and it has now been decided to retain the percolation area on the same land holding. This new proposed location will bring it within 26m of the outside edge of the monastic enclosure and further testing is required under the same licence. Findings will be posted in Excavations 2012.
