Monitoring of 21 trial pits and two trial trenches was carried out from 12 to 21 April and on 5 May 2011 as part of the geotechnical ground investigations undertaken in advance of the construction of the Corrib Onshore Pipeline tunnelling compound at Aughoose townland. These investigations were carried out by Applied Ground Engineering Consultants Ltd (AGEC). The purpose of the trial pits and trial trenches was to record peat side-wall stand-up times and for testing/sampling of mineral soil. The site investigation works undertaken in advance of development were covered under a class 45 exemption and were carried out on behalf of Shell E&P Ireland Ltd.
No finds or features of an archaeological nature were identified as a result of these works.
This phase of monitoring followed a previous archaeological, architectural and cultural heritage assessment of the proposed onshore pipeline carried out by Margaret Gowen and Co. Ltd, along with an assessment of underwater archaeology undertaken by the Archaeological Diving Company Ltd (ADCO) as part of an EIS. It also follows monitoring carried out at Glengad and Broadhaven Bay in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2009 and testing carried out at Aughoose in 2010.
