A planning application for a nursing home development at Glebe, Crossmolina, resulted in the issuing of a ‘Request for Further Information’ by the Local Authority, which required that an Impact Assessment, including testing, be prepared. The site is on the eastern outskirts of the town and on the northern side of the N59 road from Ballina. The development area is largely under pasture and with the surface falling very gently from south to north, incorporating a number of broad, low undulations.
Fifteen test trenches were excavated within the proposed development lands. All the trenches were initially excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket, after which the sides and bases were cleaned and investigated by hand. In addition, all the spoil generated by the trench excavations was ‘raked over’ in an attempt to retrieve any artefactual material that might be contained within the topsoil.
No features, deposits or structures of archaeological interest were noted during the course of the testing.
