Test-trenching was undertaken in May 2011 at Croaghaun West, Bellacorick. The greenfield site consists of boggy ground covered in rushes, rising to a low rounded hill at the eastern side of the site. Evidence of turf-cutting was also noted on the site, which is bounded on the west by the Oweninny River and a third-class road, to the south by a bridge leading to a farmhouse, and by bogland to the north and east. The nearest RMP site, MA027-003 (cist burial), is located approximately 2.6km to the west. Nine trenches were excavated at this site, with the total area tested amounting to 1,612m². In the central area of the site the peat was up to 1.7m deep. Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered during the test-trenching.
