Twenty-two test trenches were excavated by machine ahead of the proposed construction of five dwelling houses. Trenches were necessary as the works are situated in the vicinity of a well-preserved bivallate rath (MA088–083) and the grounds were well tested, taking into account the large number of trenches and the 2m-wide mechanical bucket. In general, topsoil consisted of brown or grey stony clay, never more than 0.4m thick and overlying a grey or orange gravel base. Small amounts of limestone outcrop did occur and any items recovered were modern.
