The test area follows the line of the proposed N59 road realignment scheme to the south of Newport. Testing was confined to green fields adjacent to the existing road to assess the archaeological potential of these areas. A series of nine machine trenches were excavated to undisturbed subsoil. One potential archaeological artefact, a possible mortar, was uncovered by this testing. No features or further artefacts of archaeological interest were found.
