Coolavacoose 1 was discovered during testing by Fintan Walsh (Excavations 2011, No. 361; 11E0246) undertaken within the footprint of the R402 Enfield to Edenderry Road Improvements Scheme in September 2011. The site was excavated in November 2011 on behalf of Kildare County Council.

It consisted of a probable charcoal-production kiln that measured 2.95m x 1.3m x 0.3m deep.
