Clonkeen 1, 2, 3 and 4 were discovered during testing by Fintan Walsh (below, No. 361; 11E0246) undertaken within the footprint of the R402 Enfield to Edenderry Road Improvements Scheme in September 2011. The sites were excavated in November 2011 on behalf of Kildare County Council.
Clonkeen 1 consisted of two charcoal-production kilns, the larger measuring 1.75m x 1.2m x 0.09m deep and the smaller 1.4m x 0.9m x 0.02m deep.
Clonkeen 2 consisted of four charcoal-production kilns ranging in size from 2m x 1.34m x 0.07m deep to 0.97m x 0.45m x 0.03m deep.
Clonkeen 3 consisted of a charcoal-production kiln and a post-hole. The kiln measured 1.57m x 1.1m x 0.12m deep.
Clonkeen 4 consisted of a slot-trench and three post-holes. The slot-trench was 2.35m long, 0.3m wide and 0.16m deep.
