Kilgowan 1 was discovered during testing undertaken by James Kyle (Excavations 2011, No. 359; E4373) within the footprint of the M9 Kilcullen Service Area in May and June 2011. The site was excavated, on behalf of the National Roads Authority, in July 2011.

Kilgowan 1 comprised a burnt mound made up of heat-shattered stone and charcoal-rich soil. The site was largely levelled through ploughing. The burnt mound measured 15.9m x 15.9m x 0.35m and sealed four earth-cut pits and two troughs.
