Kilgowan 2 was discovered during testing undertaken by James Kyle (Excavations 2011, No. 359; E4373) within the footprint of the M9 Kilcullen Service Area in May and June 2011. The site was excavated, on behalf of the National Roads Authority, in July 2011.

Kilgowan 2 comprised a limekiln, a mortar wall foundation and several pits and ditches, some of which contained medieval pottery. The limekiln was stone-lined and was made up of a main chamber 3.3m in diameter with an entrance to the north.
