Monitoring is being undertaken for the River Barrow Abstraction Scheme (Contract 2), Srowland to Ardscull Rising Mains, which will run for c. 6.8km through the townlands of Willsgrove, Salisbury, Shanraheen, Tomard, Sawyerswood, Clogorrow, Ardmore, Smallford, Blackwood, Aghanure and Ardscull, Co. Kildare. The works are being carried out for John Craddock Ltd on behalf of Kildare County Council. To date, five sites of archaeological significance have been identified: Ardscull 1, a group of fourteen pits; Ardmore 1, a group of three pits; Shanraheen 1, a single inhumation burial; Salisbury 1, three charcoal clamps; and Willsgrove 1, fourteen pits scattered along the pipeline wayleave.
Work commenced in December 2011 and is ongoing. An updated summary will be submitted in the 2012 bulletin.
