Ballyhagan 1 was discovered during testing by Fintan Walsh (Excavations 2011, No. 361; 11E0246) undertaken within the footprint of the R402 Enfield to Edenderry Road Improvements Scheme in September 2011. The site was excavated in November 2011 on behalf of Kildare County Council.
The site consisted of two circular charcoal-production kilns. The largest of these pits measured 1.11m x 1.06m x 0.15m deep, while the other was 1.06m in diameter and 0.2m deep.
