Ardkill 1 was discovered during testing undertaken by Fintan Walsh (Excavations 2011, No. 361; 11E0246) within the footprint of the R402 Enfield to Edenderry Road Improvements Scheme in September 2011. The site was excavated in November 2011 on behalf of Kildare County Council.
The earliest phase of activity comprised seven post-holes/post-pits adjacent to the northern edge of excavation, which may have formed part of a roughly rectangular structure. These were succeeded at a later date and truncated by a large corn-drying kiln, which in turn was truncated by one of the two plough furrow features on site.
