Testing was undertaken along the route of the N86 Annascaul–Gortbreagoge Road Improvement Scheme for Kerry County Council in August 2011. A total of 50 trenches, amounting to 3,988 linear metres, were excavated to the level of subsoil or to the top of archaeological deposits, where present. Four archaeological sites were identified along the scheme, as well as one 19th-century cottage. The archaeological sites were Ballintermon 1 (Iron Age roundhouse, 11E344; Excavations 2011, No. 293), Ballynane 1 (fulacht fiadh, 11E345; Excavations 2011, No. 295), Ballynane 2 (fulacht fiadh, 11E346; Excavations 2011, No. 296) and Brackloon 1 (kiln, 11E347; Excavations 2011, No. 299). These four sites were subsequently excavated in advance of the road scheme.
