Excavations were undertaken at Gortbrack East 1 on behalf of Kerry County Council as part of Stage (iii) of the Archaeological Services Contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N22 Tralee Bypass/Tralee to Bealagrellagh, which extends from Lissatanvally townland to Flemby townland.
Excavation revealed a single charcoal-production pit towards the centre of the excavated area. The pit was subrectangular in plan, was aligned east–west and measured 2.5m in length, 0.76m in width and 0.25m in depth. It contained two fills, both rich in charcoal and heat-affected stone.
