Excavations at Ballinorig West 1 were undertaken on behalf of Kerry County Council as part of Stage (iii) of the Archaeological Services Contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N22 Tralee Bypass/Tralee to Bealagrellagh, which extends from Lissatanvally townland to Flemby townland.

Excavation revealed three burnt mounds and a burnt spread. In addition to this, a further twenty features were found under or associated with the burnt mounds and burnt spread. They consisted of thirteen pits, three troughs and a scarped rectangular cutting. The three remaining features were stake-holes. One of the troughs was lined with a mixture of wooden planks and stone slabs.
