2011:307 - CAMP 4, Kerry

Excavations were undertaken at Camp 4 on behalf of Kerry County Council as part of Stage (iii) of the Archaeological Services Contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N22 Tralee Bypass/Tralee to Bealagrellagh, which extends from Lissatanvally townland to Flemby townland.
The excavation revealed a burnt mound and its associated features, showing only a single phase of activity.
A possible trough or pot-boiler towards the northern end of the site measured 2.1m by 1m by 0.7m in depth and was subcircular in plan. It contained four fills, which consisted of mid- to dark[mid- to dark what? brown?] clays containing heat-affected stones. Adjoining the eastern side was a spread of black silty sand. This contained heat-affected stone and charcoal and measured 3.6m by 2.2m by 0.3m deep. Overlying this was mid-brown silty clay, which measured 7.6m by 4.2m by 0.18m deep. Approximately 0.7m to the north-west was a third spread. This consisted of black silty sand with inclusions of charcoal and heat-affected stone; it measured 1.2m in diameter and 0.1m in depth.
A circular post-hole measuring 0.18m in diameter and 0.33m in depth was also identified. Its fill consisted of loosely compacted, greyish-brown silty sand with small pebbles. Approximately 6.25m to the south-south-east of the post-hole was an oval waste pit with two fills; it measured 1.85m by 1.3m by 0.35m deep. Two post-holes (0.45m x 0.4m x 0.2m deep and 0.5m in diameter x 0.27m deep) truncated the northern side of this pit. A spread of mid- to dark brown clayey silt was recorded approximately 1.65m to the east-north-east of the waste pit. It measured 3.34m long, 1.84m wide and 0.06m deep and contained heat-affected stone.
