Excavation was undertaken at Gortclohy 1 on behalf of Kerry County Council as part of Stage (iii) of the Archaeological Services Contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N69 Rea to Tullig realignment scheme, which extends from Fahavane townland to Gortclohy townland.
A total area of 25m² was exposed, revealing a single oval pit. The pit had concave sides and a concave base and measured 1.32m (east–west) by 1.15m by 0.25m deep. It contained a single fill of loose greyish-black sandy silt which included almost 50% angular unworked stones as well as occasional charcoal and pieces of oxidised clay, suggesting some burning in situ.
