Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of a proposed medical centre was undertaken at Raheen, Athenry, between 11 and 21 October 2011.
Prior to the current development, the site had suffered extensive disturbance. The surface deposit consisted of a layer of construction debris 1.2–1.7m deep. Beneath this deposit the original topsoil layer was only partially extant, indicating that a substantial portion of the site had previously been stripped. The subsoil consisted of orangish brown sandy clay with small to medium-sized stones. No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were noted.
Further monitoring at the site is scheduled to take place in 2012.
