A programme of testing was carried out in advance of a planning submission on the campus of NUI Galway, on the proposed site of a new ‘Life Course Studies’ building. The site is located in the townland of Dangan Lower in the north-west of Galway City and is accessed via the N59 Upper Newcastle Road. It lies to the south-west of the River Corrib, north-west of Corrib village (student accommodation).
Groundworks involved the mechanical excavation of six test trenches measuring 50m in length by 1.5m in width with a maximum depth of 0.8m. Testing exposed topsoil and sod overlying a mid-brown sandy silt throughout most of the site, overlying boulder clay. Monitoring of engineering trial holes was also carried out. There was no evidence of any finds, materials or features of archaeological potential.
