Six trial trenches were excavated at the site of a proposed burial ground extension in Cummer townland, Tuam, on 30 March 2011. The existing rectangular burial ground surrounds the ruined remains of Cummer church, a late medieval church in good condition. The church and graveyard are set within what the Archaeological Survey of Ireland describe as an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA043-085004). Nothing of archaeological significance was found during the testing of the proposed extension to the east of the church and graveyard.
