Monitoring was undertaken on behalf of the Office of Public Works at Crusheeny Bridge in the townlands of Crusheeny and Kiltroge, Co. Galway. The project formed part of the Clare River Flood Relief Scheme and involved the removal of the existing 20th-century concrete bridge over the Clare River. This bridge was to be replaced with a larger-span bridge which will allow a greater flow volume. The River Clare and its associated riverbanks have been severely affected by earlier land improvement schemes, especially by the Corrib Drainage Scheme in 1954. On the northern bank of the River Clare, these works were located close to the constraint zone of Kiltroge Castle (GA070-071). An area measuring c. 10m by 8m was stripped of topsoil on the southern riverbank to the east of the existing bridge. A short service trench was also excavated through an overburden deposit along the northern bank to the west of the existing bridge. No archaeological deposits or features were identified in either case.
