Testing was carried out at the Dublin City University Sports Ground, Claremont, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, as part of a pre-planning assessment. The development site once formed part of the demesne lands of Clermont House, originally constructed in the 18th century as a residence and which later housed the Deaf and Dumb Institution. The proposed development works will have a direct impact on a mound, DU014-072.
The house is not listed on the Record of Protected Structures for the area. No previous archaeological work was carried out within the boundary of the proposed development site.
Five trenches of varying lengths were excavated and potential features were investigated in order to determine their nature and origin. The mound was also tested to determine whether it was archaeological in nature. No archaeological features were present, and targeted testing showed that both the field and the mound were deliberately constructed as landscape features during the 19th century.
