An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in September 2011 at the site of a proposed private housing development to be built in phases on lands off Glenloughan Road, Scarva, Co. Down.
The first phase is located in the north-western area of the site. Prior to archaeological evaluation, development had already commenced on the site in this area, leaving only the other half of the site available for evaluation. As agreed with the NIEA, the evaluation took the form of six trenches mechanically excavated across the previously stripped area, to refresh the ground and to allow the identification of any deposits of archaeological potential, should they exist. In all trenches the weathered subsoil and remnants of topsoil were removed to reveal clean, undisturbed subsoil.
No archaeological deposits were uncovered during the evaluation, although two post-medieval field boundaries were found running across the area of the evaluation.
