Four test trenches were excavated from north to south across the site. Owing to the nature of the stone-packed upper fill it was deemed necessary to use a toothed bucket rather than a toothless one. The thickness of this redeposited material above the red sandy clay subsoil varied across the site, ranging from c. 2m in the western end of Trench 4 to less than 1m in the eastern portion of all trenches. Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered within any of the trenches; indeed, no artefacts or modern pottery, of any kind, were uncovered during trenching.
