The N72 Carrig Bridge Realignment, east of Mallow, will provide redesigned junction layouts and improved general alignment of a short, 1.2km section of the existing N72, including the removal of unsafe bends. The development will begin just west of Oliver Cross and end just east across Carrig Bridge.
A cultural heritage assessment for the scheme identified an impact on the zone of archaeological potential for Carrigleamleary (Church of Ireland) church and graveyard, both of which are listed on the RMP (CO033-08201/2).
Pre-development test-trenching was carried out in the townlands of Carrig Demesne and Kilcanway on behalf of Cork County Council from 25 to 28 July 2011. Fourteen test trenches were mechanically excavated under supervision. All accessible greenfield areas were investigated. Testing did not reveal any features of archaeological significance. A recorded lodge, located opposite Oliver’s Cross, is scheduled to be preserved by record as part of the main construction works.
