An application to Kinsale Town Council to construct an extension to a Georgian house within the historic core of the town led to a request for a test excavation to be carried out as part of an archaeological impact assessment report. The house is situated at the junction of Middle Hill and The Ramparts, in an elevated position on the upper side of the town. The development involved the refurbishment of the semi-detached weather-slated house and included the construction of a two-storey side extension and associated site works. The extension was mostly constructed against the gable end of the house in an area that was previously used as a yard. A small section of the extension projected out into an undisturbed area of the garden and the ground here was tested as part of the archaeological impact assessment report. A single test trench measuring 2.5m x 1.5m was excavated by a mechanical excavator using a wide toothless bucket. The soil profile consisted of dark brown garden soil overlying loose stony sandy subsoil. No features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered during the removal of topsoil to natural ground levels.
