Testing was carried out within the footprint of the proposed licensed discount retail store in the townland of Youghals, Clonakilty. The works were undertaken on behalf of Lidl Ireland GmbH in response to planning conditions attached to the proposed development.

Testing followed on from a geophysical survey carried out by Joanna Leigh during June 2011 (11R0079). A number of linear anomalies and isolated trends were detected, but none of these displayed characteristic patterns of response to suggest that they were of archaeological origin. A large number of cultivation furrows and some former field boundaries were identified, as well as a possible standing stone which was shown to be modern during the testing.

Twelve trenches, totalling 265 linear metres, were excavated across the site. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
