Monitoring of groundworks was conducted at the site of the proposed upgrade to a level crossing on the Ennis to Athenry Rail Line at XE82 in Gortaficka townland, Crusheen. The monitoring took place in June and August 2011, on behalf of Roughan & O’Donovan Ltd and Iarnród Éireann.

Monitoring revealed a fulacht fiadh/burnt mound site. Machine work was ceased in the area of the archaeological material, the exposed features were covered with terram, and the National Monuments Service was notified of the discovery. In October 2011 the site was excavated under licence 11E0395 (see Excavations 2011, No. 66).
