Killynebber 1-3 were discovered during testing undertaken along the proposed Cavan Town Centre Eastern Access Road in November 2010 by Ed O’Donovan, IAC Ltd (Excavations 2010, no. 81, 10E0433). The sites, excavated between 18 and 25 February 2011, were located within the townland of Killynebber to the east of Cavan Town.
No trace of the area of burning identified during testing at Killynebber 1 could be found during excavation. This was probably due to recent drainage and land improvement works.
Killynebber 2 was identified as non-archaeological bands of silt deposits. Owing to the fluvial nature of the area there was some charcoal content in the deposit, but this was not deemed to be archaeological in nature.
Killynebber 3 consisted of four burnt mound spreads and two small pits filled with burnt mound material. A sample taken from one of the spreads returned a late Bronze Age date (901–810 BC). No finds were retrieved from Killynebber 3.
