Testing was undertaken in advance of the proposed N55 Dundavan to Mullaghoran Road Realignment Scheme in the townlands of Dundavan, Lisnatinny, Kilcogy and Mullaghoran, Co. Cavan. The assessment was carried out in November 2011 on behalf of Cavan County Council.
A total length of 3,780m was excavated within the eighteen fields to be tested. A single potential archaeological site was discovered during the course of the works.
Dundavan 1 consisted of a large, irregular pit measuring 9m north-east/south-west by 2.3m and up to 0.28m deep. It contained six separate fills. It is possible that it represents the disturbed remains of Bronze Age burnt mound activity, as heat-affected stones were present. The feature was very ephemeral, however, and therefore may possibly be of more recent origin, possibly relating to field clearance.
