In December 2011 testing was undertaken in Fields 1-7 along the route of the N55 Corduff Road Realignment Scheme, Co. Cavan, on behalf of Cavan County Council and the National Roads Authority.
A total of 49 trenches were excavated (2,105m) in the townland of Corduff. One area of archaeological potential was identified. Corduff 1 comprised a partially timber-lined pit/trough (0.21m deep x 1.23m long x 0.92m wide), filled with burnt mound-type material and a small associated shallow burnt spread (1.8m long x 0.4m wide x 0.03m deep). It was not possible to carry out some archaeological testing in Fields 1 and 5 owing to overgrowth and a lack of access.
An area measuring 100m2, encompassing Corduff 1, was stripped of topsoil as part of Stage (ii) Pre-excavation services. In consultation with Project Archaeologist Niall Roycroft, it was decided that, based on the ephemeral remains, preservation by record during Stage (ii) was the most appropriate manner in which to proceed.
