A programme of testing and a building survey were undertaken on behalf of McParland Bros at 10 Freeduff Road, Cullyhanna, prior to a proposed residential development. The development site comprised an extant structure (public house) with car park and green space. A desktop assessment undertaken by Faith Bailey in February 2011 in response to a request within the grant of planning had found that, while no archaeological sites were recorded in close proximity to the proposed development, the village of Cullyhanna is recorded within the Area Plan as an Area of Archaeological Potential. It was therefore recommended that testing be carried out at the site of the proposed development. The proposed development would result in the demolition of a vernacular structure on site and so it was also recommended that a full interior and exterior written and photographic record be made of this structure. The removal of the floor slab level of the structure was also subject to monitoring by Fintan Walsh.

Testing took place on 19 May 2011 using a 20-tonne tracked machine. It was proposed to mechanically excavate three trenches across the test area. It was decided not to open Trench 3, however, as bedrock was clearly visible on the ground surface. No features of archaeological significance were identified.
