Monitoring of topsoil-stripping of a proposed extension to Jordan’s Quarry, located off the Radergan Road near Ballygawley, was undertaken in September 2011. The existing quarry has been developed in phases, which were previously subject to testing by James McKee in January 2007 (Excavations 2007, no. 1200, AE/07/18) and in April 2008 (Excavations 2008, no. 1201, AE/08/67), with no archaeological deposits being uncovered.
The extension area is located to the immediate south of the existing quarry and measures approximately 80m by 100m. It is located within an archaeologically sensitive area, with five recorded archaeological sites within a 2km radius, all of which date from prehistoric times and suggest settlement activity in the area during the Neolithic and Bronze Age.
A single pit, measuring 1m in diameter by 0.2m deep, was uncovered during the monitoring. This pit contained three small fragments of prehistoric pot, a plano-convex flint knife and a struck piece of quartz. A portion of the surrounding subsoil was scorched, indicating that the pit may have been used as a hearth. No further archaeological remains were uncovered on the site.
