Two test trenches were excavated along the length of the location of the proposed church hall. Each trench was 2m wide and approximately 50m long. The topsoil was dark, brownish black silty loam, c. 0.15m deep. It contained pieces of modern red brick, concrete blocks and early to mid-20th-century pottery and glass. The subsoil was hard, stony red clay; the surface of the subsoil was covered with small pieces of coal and clinker.
The test trenching uncovered no artefacts or features of archaeological significance. Considering the brick, glass and pottery in the topsoil along with the coal and the clinker on the surface of the subsoil, it is probable, if not conclusive, that this area was cleared during the development of the adjoining airfield in the 1940s.
