Monitoring was carried out in Glenart Demesne, Arklow, Co. Wicklow, between April and September 2010. Monitoring was required during the construction works associated with the Arklow water supply scheme due to the vicinity of Glenart Castle, 100m north-west of the pipeline route. The scheme traversed the townlands of Glenart, Pollahoney and Ballyfuff North in County Wicklow. This section of the pipeline had a total length of c. 2.5km and travelled through the demesne lands and woodland originally associated with Glenart Castle.
Evidence for the raising of the ground level was identified along the old Arklow to Woodenbridge road, where a pre-existing road surface was identified c. 1m below the current ground level. This artificial raising of the surrounding surface was probably undertaken to combat flooding by the nearby river and is probably contemporary with the construction of a stone bridge.
Although numerous features were investigated, nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during the course of works.
