Excavations at Landscape 1 were undertaken on behalf of Wexford County Council as part of the Stage (iii) archaeological services contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N25 New Ross bypass road scheme.
Excavation revealed an oval charcoal-production pit. This measured 1.95m long (east-north-east/west-south-west), 1.35m wide and 0.2m deep and contained frequent charcoal flecks, which were confined mainly to the lower part of the fill, within its soil matrix.
A small pit, measuring 0.84m in length (east–west), 0.5m in width and 0.08m to 0.14m deep, was also identified. Its fill also had charcoal flecks but its function in relation to the charcoal-production pit remains uncertain.
