Kilcannon 4 was located on the proposed M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy scheme. The site was situated in a tillage field that had recently been harvested. There is a slight gradient in the field and the site was positioned at the top of the rise. From the site there are extensive views to the south and south-east.
Three pits were identified at Kilcannon 4. An oval pit, measuring 2.3m by 1.4m was 0.4m deep, had vertical sides and a flat base. This pit contained two fills: a loose black charcoal-rich silt sand which contained a high quantity of heat-affected stones was overlain by a loose mid-brown/black silt clay which contained a small quantity of burnt stones; a second oval pit measured 1.2m by 0.84m and was 0.37m deep with sloping sides and a concave base. The single fill of this pit was stony, loose black silt sand. The third and largest pit, which contained three fills, was sub-oval in plan, 3.74m long and 2.33m wide and was 0.34m deep, with gradual sloping sides and a flat base. The basal fill was mottled grey/brown silt clay which contained a small quantity of burnt stones and occasional charcoal flecks. The second fill was loose light-grey silt clay which contained a high quantity of burnt stones and occasional charcoal flecks. The upper fill consisted of medium compacted orange/brown silt clay which contained a small amount of burnt stone and charcoal flecks.
These pits may have been troughs or pits associated with a nearby burnt mound.
