Monitoring was undertaken at Holmestown Waste Management Facility, Holmestown, Co. Wexford. Wexford County Council obtained planning permission to carry out the development of a fully engineered landfill and civic amenity site at Holmestown Great. The works were undertaken in two phases, of which Phase 1 is complete and currently in operation. The second phase was undertaken in the summer of 2010 and monitored in accordance with granted planning permission.
Holmestown Great is located c. 8km west of Wexford town, just north of the Waterford/Rosslare road (N25). Prior to the works, the site had been covered with forestry owned by Coillte.
No archaeological features/remains were uncovered during monitoring works. The area had been greatly disturbed by forest and the presence of a very large mound of previously excavated soil from the first phase of works, over an area that had been previously topsoil-stripped.
