Excavations at Camlin 8 were undertaken on behalf of Wexford County Council as part of the Stage (iii) archaeological services contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N25 New Ross bypass road scheme. The archaeological features were divided into two main areas or foci of activity (Areas A–B) which produced evidence for the production of charcoal.
Excavation at Area A revealed an oval charcoal-production pit. This measured 1.49m in length (east–west), 0.96m in width and between 0.02–0.07m in depth; its fill contained moderate amounts of charcoal. A small pit of uncertain function was situated in close proximity to this feature. This was subcircular in plan and measured 0.72m long (east–west) by 0.64m wide by 0.18m deep
Two post-medieval linear features were also identified in Area A.
Excavation at Area B revealed two pits of uncertain function. The first was subcircular in plan, measuring 0.3m in length (north-west/south-east), 0.28m in width and 0.09m in depth. Its fill was slightly oxidised and contained occasional charcoal flecks within the soil matrix. The second pit was slightly irregular in plan and measured 1.1m long, 1m wide and 0.25m deep. A single large stone was situated at its centre.
A post-medieval linear feature was also identified in Area B.
