Excavations at Camlin 3 were undertaken on behalf of Wexford County Council as part of the Stage (iii) archaeological services contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N25 New Ross bypass road scheme. The archaeological features identified at Camlin 3 were divided into three main areas or foci of activity (Areas A–C), which produced evidence of an inverted urn burial.
Excavation at Area A revealed no features of archaeological significance.
Excavation at Area B revealed an isolated pit of uncertain function. It was oval in plan and measured 0.86m (north–south) by 0.55m by 0.8m deep; its fill contained occasional charcoal flecks throughout.
Excavation at Area C revealed an inverted urn burial. This was block-lifted by conservator Suzanne Kelly, and a licence to alter from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is still awaited to proceed with the work necessary for analysis and conservation. Due to the nature of the block-lifting process it was not possible to make an accurate record of the cut of the feature; however, prior to excavation the burial-pit measured 0.35m in diameter and the urn approximately 0.2m in diameter.
Four features associated with tree or stone clearance activities were also identified in Area C. These were mainly irregular in plan and averaged 2m in length, 1.2m in width and 0.27m in depth.
