Planning permission was granted for the construction of three dwelling-houses at a site previously tested by Red Tobin under licence 08E0172 (Excavations 2008, No. 1270). Further to the recommendations of the testing report, it was required by Wexford County Council that groundworks at the site be monitored.
Initial groundworks at the site were undertaken without archaeological supervision. These unmonitored groundworks were, however, undertaken in an area which had been previously tested and found to be archaeologically sterile. The edges of the topsoil-stripped areas were inspected in 2009 and a proportion of the topsoil removed from the site was metal detected. It was concluded that the groundworks were unlikely to have had an impact on any previously unknown archaeological deposits.
Further groundworks associated with the development of the site’s entranceway were monitored in 2010. No archaeological features of deposits were uncovered during the monitoring exercise.
It is foreseen that further groundworks at the site may be monitored in 2011.
